Sanction basically means a dependable authorization or consent, which in turn makes any kind of action to be suitable. It is also considered to be as some kind of support or encouragement, as from communal belief or recognized tradition. It also means a contemplation, power, or belief that dictates a moral choice. It is also considered to be a law or decree or even a sentence for rebelliousness particularly in a regulation or verdict.

This word is derived from the Middle English word enactment of a law and even Old French word ecclesiastical decree, which means binding law, penal sanction. In terms of sociology it is considered to be as a social control.
