Solemn is an adjective that means grave or serious. It may indicate behaviour that is somber in manner. It may allude to someone who is committed to keeping his word or promises. Some examples include, 'He solemnly vowed to avenge his father's death', or 'She suddenly became very grave and solemn'.

Solemn may also pertain to someone who is honest and earnest. In this context solemn would be descriptive of an individual who is characterized by a humourless belief in the validity of his principles or opinions. Some examples include 'The priest was known to be an earnest, solemn and spiritual man', or, 'This movie had a solemn message for youngsters'.

Solemn is often used in reference to some form of religious commitment or promise. For instance, in Catholicism, solemn vows are those taken by members of the priesthood, namely those of chastity, poverty and obedience.
