The word Sequoia can be used as a name for a boy as well as for a girl. It has a Cherokee origin. It taken from the name of a Cherokee leader named Sequoyah. Sequoia means 'sparrow'. Sequoya and Sequoyah are the variant forms of Sequoia. According to the 1990 census of United States of America, Sequoia is rarely used as a surname and a male first name. It is popular as a feminine name.

The term sequoia is also used a name of a genus (botany). A coniferous tree or red wood tree is scientifically named Sequoia sempervirens (always living). This tree is found in southern Oregon along the coastal ranges. It is also sited in the central and northern California. The red wood of this tree is soft and also called Sequoia. Any wood that possesses a reddish colour and is used to produce a red dye is a called sequoia.
