Sempervirens is used in relation to plants. It is a genus of plants and includes two species. The plants are Sequoia sempervirens and Laurelia sempervirens. These are coniferous trees. The term Sempervirens has its origin in Latin and means evergreen or always green or always fresh or simply smart. Sempervirens is made up of two words –semper and virens. The word simper means always. Virens is a past participle of virere which means to be green.

The species name Sequoia was given in Honour of the Indian chief Sequoyah who invented the Cherokee alphabet. Sempervirent is an adjective associated with these trees. The Sequoia sempervirens are the world's tallest trees and also called coast red woods. The redwood bark is rich reddish brown in colour and is thick with deep furrows. Laurelia sempervirens is an aromatic tree.
