The word "shallow" refers to something lacking substantial physical depth or in other words something that from the bottom or top to the surface measures very little. The word shallow also means something that lacks depth in relation to knowledge, intellect, character or emotion. Shallow can also be used when referring to short breaths that are taken during the process of respiration. The word shallow is derived from the Middle English word "schalowe". A synonym for shallow is shoal and its antonyms include aware, deep, profound, thoughtful, intelligent, serious etc.

"The shallow end of the swimming pool is meant for children", "They fight over trifles, exceedingly shallow people" and "The ship got stuck in shallow waters" are all examples of shallow being used in sentences.
