The word patrilineal is an adjective and you can use the word to describe the relationship of a father with his child that is continuing in a family with every generation. You can describe something else also that has its base on this relationship. The following sentence can illustrate the meaning of the word very clearly: In the Hindu societies in India, the inheritance of land or any property is patrilineal. The sentence says that in above-mentioned societies the children get the land and the property that is owned by their father.

A matrimonial society is just the opposite of patrimonial in which a child can inherit property from his or her mother. But this kind of society is not very common and efforts are being made to give equal rights to people of every sex.
