The word "paring" is the present participle of the verb "to pare." The act of removing or peeling out the outer skin or covering is known as "paring." It can also imply slicing or scraping off a thin slice or outer layer of a thing. For example, an act of chiselling or giving shape to wood by cutting and chipping unwanted pieces is also known as paring. Paring is an act which works toward gradually reducing something bit by bit.
