The word nana has two different uses in two different societies and the uses are exactly opposite to each other.

In the north-eastern part of the US people use this word to convey the idea of grandmother but in India this very word stands for the maternal grandfather. And the Indian use of the word is getting popularity as more and more people are showing interest in the culture of India.

These words is particularly getting fame because in the Indian societies usually grandfathers love their grandchildren more than even fathers and as the children are growing and visiting places, they are taking their cultures also with them. And it is this cultural exchange that makes it possible for people the world over to know more about the Indian societies. Sometimes the word is also used for a stupid person.

I'm Spanish and Puerto Rican. We use the term Nana for grandmother. My 9 yr old cousin calls her grandma Nana. We also use the word Nena for baby or child.  So if we were to say hey baby or boy or girl, we would say Hey Nena(Baby) Hey Nena (girl) Hey Neno(boy)
