According to the Oxford English Dictionary, there are two meanings of the word, each with their own sub-definitions. It can mean 'a shaped piece of rigid material used as a pattern for processes such as cutting out, shaping, or drilling; something that serves as a model for others to copy; in computing, a preset format for a document or file; and in biochemistry, a nucleic acid molecule that acts as a pattern for the sequence of assembly of a protein, nucleic acid, or other large molecule.'

Alternatively, it can stand for a physical piece of timber or a plate 'used to distribute the weight in a wall or under a support.'

Its etymological origins come from a 'templet' in the 17th century, which was an architectural term as dictated above. In contemporary jargon, a template can also refer to the smooth area between the breasts and the neck.

In terms of computing templates, there are several websites offering readymade templates, including FreeWebsiteTemplates and TemplateMonster, which are user-friendly and free to use. Templates are useful when constructing invitations and personalised websites: WebEden is a useful model of such a template, and blastocyst.org.uk, for instance, is one such website where the basic tools and layout is pre-programmed, with only pictures, videos and images being added.
