Kanawha is a word of Native American origin. Kanawha is generally thought to mean 'place of white stone'. Alternatively it means 'big brother' in the Catawba tribe dialect. It is the name of the Kanawha River which is one of the tributaries of the River Ohio which stretches over 97 miles that is 156 km. It is situated in the American state of West Virginia. Since the nineteenth century this river has immensely contributed to the industrial development in the area. Incidentally it is the longest river in the state of West Virginia.

The Kanawha County is also in the state of West Virginia. Its population is approximately 200,073 according to a census of 2000. Its county seat is in Charleston. Kanawha was also the former name of the state of West Virginia.
