The word "shill" is a noun that is used in slang to refer to a person who is colluding with another person with the object to hustle or swindle a third person or people. The person who is acting as a shill pretends not to recognize the person who is conducting a gambling venture or some other sale and pretends to enjoy or be impressed with the service, product or outcome that is foreseeable. The person so acting is actually in league with the primary hustler or conman. The word is believed to be derived from the word "shillaber".

In terms of gambling a shill may also be a person who is playing on behalf of the house, bank or casino in order for there to be enough of a quorum or interest in the game.
