Also, there's a meaning rarely refered to , in terms of computer gaming, especially in Dungeons & Dragons system, where an invocation is a province of magic concerned with channeling the magic energy in order to create certain objects or cause wanted effects. Invocation requires an intervention of some higher power to which the incantation of the spell is adressed. After gaining the energy, the sorceror can freely shape it to suit their needs.

The word invocation is used in very formal English and the meaning it conveys is that of the act of asking somebody for help. Usually the person you are asking for help is God himself or somebody who commands a position of authority. The word can be used for the act of referring to something also and sometimes you can use it when you are calling somebody to appear.

These days with the ever increasing use of computers the word has also seen the increase in its use as one of the meaning of the word is that of the act of making a particular computing function to start.

The following sentence can help you understand the meaning of the word clearly: He was praying for the god's invocation but there was no reprieve for him as it is your act on earth that determines your destiny not the pray that you do after committing a sin.
