Crazing is also known alligatoring, is an experience that frequently precedes fracture in some of the materials made up of glassy thermoplastic polymers. The crazing effect mostly occurs in region with high hydrostatic tension.

Crazing can also occur in regions that have very localized yielding; this leads to the formation of small fibrils and interpenetrating micro voids. Crazing is also seen in some glazes that are used on pottery; the effects of crazing can also be seen on concrete.
