Hellenic is an adjective and is used for something related to Greece whether it is ancient or modern. Some people argue that the word refers only to the time before the time of Alexander the great but usually it is used for both ancient and modern Greece. The adjective can be used for anything pertaining to Greece; it can be the culture, the language or the philosophy propagated over there.

Sometimes the word is being used as a noun also and is a synonymous term for the Greek language. The language consists in it the various languages of Indo-European family right from ancient to modern.

There are some other words also that are based on the same root and the most well known among them is Hellene which is used to refer to a person from Greece.
