Hooray is a shout of joy, victory or enthusiasm. It is written in its various forms such as hurrah, hurray, hoorah or hooray. It basically refers to a shout that exclaims victory. It is believed to have come from the German word "hurra".

Hooray is supposed to be a form of the word hurrah which is a shout used to exclaim approval, victory, elevation and pleasure. It means a shout of hurrah and represents fanfare and excitement.

If a person were to suggest cheering somebody on it would imply shouting hooray for them. As in coach: "three cheers for our football team, hip hip", fans "hooray".

Hooray in Dutch would be "hoera", in French it would be "hourra" in German "Hurra", and in Italian "urra".
