Polka basically is a form of a dance, genre and even dance music. It was started in the mid 19th century in Bohemia, and is even till today a widespread genre of Czech as well as Slovenian folk music.

It is also widespread in Europe and the Americas as well. In classical music, a number of polkas were made by Johann Strauss I as well as by his son Johann Strauss II. The few well known ones were created by Bedrich Smetana and Jaromir Vejvoda, who was the writer of Skoda lasky.

The term Polka originates from the Czech term pulka, which means half, and is associated to a half rhythm, is the music. Because of its name it is generally associated with Poland. It should also not be mixed up with polska, which is a Swedish ¾ beat dance having a Polish background.
