Generic can be defined as being common to or relating to all the members of a particular genus; for instance 'generic name'. It may alternatively be anything that is applicable to all members of a group or an entire group or class; for example 'is there a generic European mindset?' Generic may be a wine that is prepared as by blending many varieties of grapes without being dominated by any one component. In other words a generic wine is one that does not have the name of any one particular grape. It may also refer to products that are not sold under any brand name.

A generic drug is one which is not protected by any trademark. A generic interface or class is one which can potentially parameterize formal type parameters or which declares one or more variables. Generic functions are those functions where the method employed will depend on the class of its arguments.
