The word 'eunuch' has a Greek origin. The word has its roots in the word eunoukhos. Eunoukhos is formed from eunē and okhos. Eunē means bed and okhos means keeping. Thus, Eunoukhos means 'bedroom guard'. This was person who guarded a king's wives in past times, especially in some eastern countries. Okhos was obtained from ekhein which meant 'to keep'. Later, the Latin modified it as eunūchus. Then, it was adapted by Middle English as 'eunuk'.
A eunuch is a man whose testicles have been cut or are not functioning. Such a person is termed castrated. In informal usage, a eunuch or castrated man or a boy is considered ineffectual, powerless man. Such a person is not considered to be masculine. The trait or such condition of being a eunuch is termed eunuchism.
