The word melancholy is used both as a noun and as an adjective and you can use the word for a very deep feeling of sadness. Usually the word is used for a kind of sadness the reason of which is hard to explain and the feeling also lasts for a long time. The following sentence can make the meaning of the word quite clear as it is used in the context to make you understand well: Though we had all the facilities available to enjoy, an indescribable feeling of melancholy descended over us.

As an adjective the word can describe anything that makes you feel sad and you can use the terms 'melancholy thoughts' and 'melancholy memories' to describe sad thoughts and memories respectively.

The word 'melancolie' is a Romanian term and it is used as a synonymous term for the word melancholy.

Melancholy is the word you can use for a feeling of sadness that usually lasts for a long time. But one of the queer facts about the word is that when you are using the word to express a feeling of sadness usually there is no definite reason for the person to feel sad. It's a psychological phenomenon that sometimes you are sitting somewhere and after thinking about something for a while you start feeling sad. Usually some aspect of a phenomenon that you find is not as good as you wanted and that makes you feel sad. But this theory is also not based on any concrete claim so it is hard to explain why the phenomenon happens.

I know that it means a constitutional tendency to be gloomy and depressed... But when a person is saying: Rapture and ecstasy, ecstasy and rapture!-- there were imagination's transports, abetted by the piercing sweetness of melancholy..     What would that mean?
