A deterrent is a hindrance or even a negative motivational influence which will prevent/delay somebody from performing something.

A deterrent is also used to prevent rodents, mice's, cats and other animals to access a specific or even to create a specific action. Generally, nations develop nuclear weapons to deter another country from attacking its territories. A deterrent can be in form of an action or a substance which is created to stop an inappropriate/unacceptable action or result.

A very good example of deterrent is in the form of weapons, especially nuclear weapons that are kept by countries such as India and Pakistan to deter other countries from attacking its territory.
