The dictionary definition of the word dexterity is 'skill and grace in physical movement, especially in the use of the hands.' It can also mean mental skill or adroitness.

Manual dexterity is an important tool in life as it affects the way people hold a pen to write and how they type on a keyboard. Dexterity also affects the way the hands, especially the fingers, grasp or hold objects.

When applying for certain jobs a manual dexterity test will need to be taken. This test will examine the fine motor skills of a person by looking at the movement of the fingers, hands and arms. Fine motor skills are the coordination of the smaller muscles in the fingers, in coordination with the eyes, whereas gross motor skills focus more on the body as a whole and the larger muscles in the body.

There are a few different types of dexterity test including the O'Connor Fingers and Tweezers Test. This test focuses mainly on the fingers and involves the subject placing pins in holes, and using the tweezers to perform the placement of the pins. This test is used for sewing jobs as well as dentistry.

The Minnesota Dexterity Test is used to ascertain suitability for industrial jobs and measures the eye-hand coordination. The Roeder manipulative aptitude test assesses the person with regard to assembling and sorting objects, included in this test are rods, nuts, washers and caps. This is used for manual jobs that require delicate dexterity including mechanics. The correct test must be performed for each specific job role otherwise they become meaningless. The test results are usually compared to a standard result, an average.
