Coniferous is the adjective form of the noun conifer which has its roots in the Latin conifer meaning cone-bearing, which comes from conus, meaning cone + -fer. Conifer could refer to any variety of by and large evergreen trees and shrubs which are of the order Coniferales. A synonym for the term coniferous is cone-bearing.

Such coniferous trees are characterized by their typically needle-shaped or scalelike leaves. They include forms (as pines) possessing true cones as well as others (as yews) which have an arillate fruit. These trees are commonly cone shaped.

Some of the standard examples of conifers include firs, cedars, douglas-firs, cypresses, pines, redwoods, yews and spruces. You will find different species of conifers growing naturally in nearly all corners of the globe and conifers have great economic value.
