Briar can also be spelt as 'brier'. It has a Latin origin. It is taken from brūcus which meant heather. This word is a name for a Mediterranean shrub Erica arborea. This is a small tree with hard and woody roots. These roots are used to make tobacco pipes. Briar is also used as a name for a smoking pipe made from these roots of Erica arborea or a pipe made from any similar wood.

There is another noun which is a variant of brier. This originated from Old English and is taken from the word brēr. This word 'brier' is used to denote any of the thorny plants, like plants belonging to genera Rosa, genera Rubus and Smilax. The Brier is championship game in Canada. There is a place named Briar in Missouri and Brier in Washington.
