The term exhortation depicts a phenomenon in which somebody urges or appeals somebody to act on a particular action or to change the course of something. In other words you can describe it as an act of persuasion to attain a goal.

Most of the times an exhortation is considered to be good to the person who is being exhorted, but sometimes it happens that the person sounds as if he is warning and in that case, the person revolts instead of paying heed to the persuasion. If that happens the person who is exhorting has to retreat and all his efforts go in vain. To save yourself of any kind of embarrassment, it is advisable that first think that what kind of reaction you will get and then only decide the next course of action.
