Tempo is the rate of speed of a musical piece or passage indicated by one of a series of directions (as largo, presto, or allegro) and often by an exact metronome marking. It is also the rate of motion or activity. Its synonym is pace.

According to music terminology, tempo basically is the speed as well as the pace of a particular piece. It is an extremely vital factor of sound, as it can influence the frame of mind and difficulty of a piece.

The plural form of tempo according to the Italian language is tempi. Quiet a few authors use the plural form while writing in English. Where as some writes employ the native English plural tempos, how ever the English dictionaries reveal both the applications. The tempo of a piece will characteristically be jotted down at the beginning of a piece of music, and in contemporary music it is generally specified in beats per minute, which means that a specific note value is illustrated as the beat number.

Tempo simply means how fast the song is. E.g. Halo by Beyonce. The song is a very slow song so the tempo of that song is very slow.
