What Does Synagogue Mean?
A Synagogue is a House of Worship for people of the Hebrew, or Jewish, religion. A very large Synagogue is sometimes called a Temple.
Synagogue used frequently in Judaism, refers to the place of worship for Jewish congregation. It is a Jewish house of prayer and study. In a synagogue, there is a separate room for prayer (Beit Tefila, in Hebrew), and smaller separate rooms for study (Hebrew, house of study).
Though synagogue is normally associated with prayer, it is also a place for communal activities, adult education and school for children. A section of Jews (Reform Jews) use the term "temple" instead of "the synagogue" to state their place of worship but traditional Jews stick to the latter term, because they believe that Judaism had only one temple, the temple of Jerusalem. Most Conservative synagogues have prayer services daily, generally one morning service and two evening services. Special services are held on Shabbat (the Sabbath) and on the Jewish holidays. Most Reform Temples only have prayer services twice a week.
