Solicit is defined as to try to obtain something by means of entreaty, persuasion or by a formal application. For example, 'The presidential candidate solicited votes among the masses that gathered for his speech'.

Solicit may also mean to petition continuously or persistently. For instance 'The social workers solicited all the neighbours for donations for the proposed animal shelter'.

Solicitation is the noun type of the verb to solicit. It is a legal term. In American legal jargon solicitation means to incite, entice, counsel, advise, urge or command someone to commit some illegal act or offense. In England on the other hand, soliciting means to loiter in a public area in order to engage in some form of prostitution.

Solicit is synonymous with the terms call for, request and beg for. For instance 'She was too proud to beg, too honest to steal and too shy to solicit'.
