Combative basically is a word used by the United States Army for hand-to-hand combat preparation. At present it covers a number of hybrid martial arts, which inculcate a large number of diverse martial arts as well as combat sports.

Different from combat sports, these systems generally have limited sport application and usually focus on basic techniques which are used for self-defence or combat. For many years military organizations have trained their soldiers with some sort of unarmed combat as an enhancement to armed combat.

Even though over the period of years technological changes like the use of gunpowder in the Napolenic wars occurred, but hand to hand combat training methods remained an integral part of central to modern military preparation. At times combative is also known as close combat.
