The term psalm is a noun that refers to a sacred song. It is used as a synonym for a hymn. Psalms is the name given to a book in the Old Testament of the bible which is made up of a collection of a total of 150 Psalms. It is also known as the Book of Psalms. A psalm in particular refers to any of the biblical hymns which are found in the Book of Psalms.

When used as a transitive verb, the word psalms meaning singing of or celebrating in psalms.

The term is Middle English; coming from Old English term psealm; from the Late Latin word psalmus, ultimately from the Greek term psalmos, meaning twanging of a harp; which comes from the term psallein, meaning to play the harp.
