The word purulent is an adjective and you can use the term for something that contains or produces pus. The word is basically a medical term and you will hardly find the use of it in normal conversation. The following sentence can make the meaning of the term quite clear: We need to take him to the doctor because his wounds are getting serious. I have seen the purulent discharge from it. The sentence says that pus is coming out of it and the person required immediate medical attention.

The word finds its origin in Latin, where it has come from the word 'purulentus' and conveys the same idea as that of the derivative. And it can trace its origin in the last decade of the sixteenth century.
