Proletariat is a term given to the working class people in society. It is a French term describing the workers. It is referred to in Karl Marx' Communist Manifesto. This class of society is always in conflict and competition with the bourgeoisie or the upper class. The proletariats sell their unskilled labour in order to survive and in order to produce the goods needed by society to the bourgeoisie.

Thus it is a word for the lower class in society. A member of this class is known as a proletarian. It initially was a derogatory term but Marx gave it a sociological meaning by which it is known in the modern times. These people do not have any wealth of their own and depends on their own health or their sons for survival. They are labourers who do not have their own means of production due to which they are often abused or exploited by the bourgeoisie or the upper class.
