The word poppet is the ancient spelling for the modern word puppet. It has been derived from the Middle English the word poppet. This word can refer to a small child or a doll. Even today in British Dialect it still holds the very same meaning.

A poppet is also a doll that represents a person for the casting of fertility, healing or binding spells on a certain person. These dolls are most often associated with the art of witchcraft; it can also be made from materials like grain, corn shafts, carved root, clay, branches, potato, wax or cloth stuffed with herbs. The intention of these poppets is that, whatever spell or action is performed on the effigy of that person, it will directly be transferred to that specific person.
