The term dong is a deep sound like that of a large bell. Dong is also a big, shallow lake located in the north-eastern Hunan region of China. It is also known as the Dongting Lake or Lake Dongting.

It is basically a flood-basin of the Yangtze River, thus the size of the Lake depends on the time of year. The region of Hubei and Hunan get their name after their site virtual to the lake: Hubei mean "North of the Lake" where as Hunan means "South of the Lake" according to the Chinese language.

During the months of July to September, flood waters from the Yangtze stream into the lake, expanding it greatly. The lake's area, which generally is 2,820 square kilometres, may enlarge to 20,000 square kilometres.
