Nymph is a term found in the Greek and Roman mythology. It refers to any of the numerous minor deities in these cultures. Nymph is a word that indicates beautiful maidens or goddesses who inhabit and personify features of nature such as trees, water and mountain. Nymph therefore is a reference to female divinity. There are different types of nymphs. They are either immortal or long lived.

The nymphs' cult was widespread in Greece. They are often associated with good qualities like young, beautiful, musical, amorous and gentle but many a time they also have wilder aspects to their nature and are quite capable of revenge and destruction. Some of the most famous nymphs are Arethusa, Thetis, Calypso, and Echo. There are famous legends associated to these nymphs in the Greek mythology.
