The term 'non-commissioned' says nothing more than its literal meaning that is somebody who is yet to become commissioned. But seldom will you find the word used this way and almost always it is used in conjugation with officer. The term that you will come across usually is non-commissioned officer and it describes a soldier in the army who is on the rank of sergeant or corporal, but never above that. Usually the term the army-men use for that kind of officers are the abbreviated form NCO as it makes their task easy.

There are several words that are in existence and are formed by conjugating the word 'non' with another word. You can find the word non-committal, non-compliance and non-conformity and several others that are formed as such.
