Mohican is the name of a Native American tribe. A member of this tribe is also known as Mohican. They are also at times known as The Mahicans. This tribe lived around the Hudson Valley in America but layer moved on to northeastern Wisconsin, US. This tribe is often confused and mistaken with another tribe named as Mohegan.

The Mohican tribe came into contact for the first time with the Europeans during the early 17th century. Many members of this tribe also settled down in the town of Stockbridge and since then they are known as Stockbridge Indians. Many of them converted to Christianity during the 18th century due to the advent of the missionaries. Their language also known as the Mohican language has become almost extinct but it belonged to the Algonquian language family. A famous novel has been written on this tribe by James Moore. This novel is titled as The Last of the Mohicans.

As the names are very similar people often make the common mistake of thinking that the Mohicans and the Mohegans are people of the same tribe. The word Mohican is pronounced as "muh-HEE-can". It is derived from another word Muheconneok which means, "From waters that are never still" when literally translated into English.

Muheconneok is the Mohican name for the Hudson River. This tribe originally lived on the banks of the Hudson River but was forced to flee and settle down in the west by the invasion of the Europeans. Now they are found in Stockbridge area of Wisconsin, New York and Massachusetts. They like many other Native American tribes in USA live on a reservation which they share with the Munsee tribe. This tribe is ruled by sachems or tribes though now all that has changed and they have a democratically elected council to govern them.
