The word "oculus" is used in terms of Architecture and medicine when referring to the eyes or in the former case to something resembling its appearance. In the architectural sense it can also refer to a round window or the circular opening that is seen at the apex of domes. The word is derived from the Medieval Latin from the Latin word for eye.

In the English language the word is confined to the spheres of architecture or medicine. In the field of medicine and optics the words Oculus Uturque (OU), Oculus Sinister (OS) and Oculus Dexter (OD) meaning both eyes, left eye and right eye respectively are used.

The word "oculus" in architecture is most prominently used in reference to the eye like opening in the grand dome of the Pantheon located in Rome, Italy.
