The term modest is an adjective meaning having or exhibiting a moderate view of one's own abilities, talents, and value. It is also used to mean proceeding from or having a reluctance to draw attention to oneself; that is, retiring or diffident. In this sense, it may be used to mean chaste or shy. It is also often applied to an observance of conventional and traditional proprieties in dress, speech or behaviour.

It has also been used to mean free from ostentation or showiness. A synonym in this sense of the term would be unpretentious or even plain. It could also refer to moderate or limited in quantity, size, or range; that is, not extreme.

Modest comes from the Latin term modestus, meaning moderate. The adverb form of the word modest is the term modestly.
