The word 'Muff', like most words in the English language, has a number of different meaning. Here are some of the most common appearances of the word:

  • A handwarmer
  • Ear'muffs'
  • Big 'muff'
  • Muff (a mutation found in chickens and poultry)
  • Muff (the mishandling of a loose ball in American football)

In the sense of a handwarmer, a muff is a usually cylindrical piece of material fabric or fur, for use outdoors for the purpose of keeping the hands warm. Introduced into women's fashion in the 16th century, it became popular for both men and women during the 17th and 18th centuries, although by the time of the 20th century, it was fashionable for only women to wear muffs.

Most people would associated 'earmuffs' with having a similar purpose to handwarmers; ie a furry device for keeping the ears warm in adverse weather (thermal earmuffs). However, it is also used to refer to safety features on hard hats, like the ear protectors that can usually be dropped down from the peak of the hat (acoustic earmuffs), usually for ear defense against loud noises that would otherwise be damaging to a person's hearing.

'Big muffs' are a range of iconic distortion pedals for use with electric guitars, made famous by the Grunge bands of the Seattle scene in the early nineties. The band Mudhoney famously included an image of a Big Muff distortion pedal on their branded t-shirts, replacing the words 'Big Muff' with 'Mudhoney', in the same style of lettering seen on the pedal. They also named a debut EP of theirs after the piece of equipment, calling it 'Superfuzz Bigmuff' in direct reference to it.

In chickens and poultry, a muff is a genetic mutation for under the beaks of said birds. This mutation gives extra feathering in those areas, giving the striking resemblance of a beard or 'muff'. Although the word 'mutation' sounds harmful, it is in fact a harmless genetic defect, in much the same way that blue eyes in humans is technically a genetic mutation.

In the rules of American Football, a muff is a 'loose ball that is dropped or mishandled while the player is attempting to gain possession.'

There are also plenty of risque connotations of the word 'muff', but we shall leave those for you to find on your own accord. Given the nature of the internet, they shouldn't be too hard to find.

Clearly you ask the question because you heard the term either on a sports show, it was winter, you were watching an X-rated movie, or one of your homies was talking smack. In that case, a muff is an error in sports...someone missed a play, made a bad shot, or failed to make a catch. In cold weather, a muff is used to keep the ears or hands warm. In an X-rated movie, or street slang, a muff is referred to the hair covering the vaginal area.

The word "muff" has two meanings. In one sense it refers to handle or perform clumsily or to bungle. In sports this is used to refer to clumsiness when referring to the failure to catch or make a catch. In this sense it is not known where the word "muff" originated.

Another meaning of the word "muff" is a garment made of cloth or fur which is cylindrical in shape. Its basic use is to keep ones hands warm. It is mostly used by women. Certain breeds of fowl have at the side of their faces clusters of feathers which is also called a muff. "Muff" may also refer to the vulva as a vulgar sort of slang. The word "muff" in this sense is believed to have come from the Dutch word "mof". This was in turn taken from the Middle Dutch word "moffle" borrowed in its turn from the Old French word "mofle" meaning "mitten". The roots of the word however can be traced to the Medieval Latin word "muffula".
