Macabre is an adjective used for something that is extremely unpleasant and strange and is used especially for something that is connected with death and frightening things. There are many synonymous terms also in existence for this particular word and ghoulish and grisly are prime among them. But macabre is more commonly used than the later mentioned two. The following sentence can make the meaning of the word quiet clear as it is used in context: Do not tell macabre tales to kids in the night because it might have bad effect on their psyche. In the abovementioned sentence the person is preventing somebody from telling the kind of stories that are frightening as the psychology of the kid can get affected badly.

The word can be used in art also where somebody is trying to represent some bad characteristics with the help of a frightening figure.
