The word 'inhibition' is obtained from the verb 'inhibit'. Inhibit originated in Latin and stems from the word 'inhibere' or 'inhibit'. Inhibere means 'to restrain or forbid'. Inhibition is the noun from of 'inhibit.' The act of suppressing or the state of being suppressed or inhibited is called inhibition. If something acts as a restraint or an obstacle, it is also termed as inhibition. For example: her domestic duties proved to be an inhibition for the progress of her career. The psychological behaviour of restraining or stopping oneself from expressing a behavioural process or any desire is termed 'inhibition'.

A chemical or Biological process in which the rate of reaction slows down or is stopped is also called 'inhibition'.
