An infarction is a localized necrosis which results from an impediment of the blood supply. It could be used to mean an infarct. A synonym for the same is the term infarct.

Infarctions are divided into White (anemic) infarctions and Red (hemorrhagic) infarctions. Infarcted is the adjective form of the word infarct. The term infarct comes from the Latin word infarctus, which is a past participle of the word infarcire meaning to stuff, it comes from: in- + farcire meaning to stuff.
