Kaffir is generally used to refer to a person who spoke the Bantu language hailing from South East Africa. Over time however it gradually became a highly offensive and derogatory term applied to any 'coloured person' or rather Black Africans in particular. Historically however it was the term used to indicate a person native to South Africa during the age of imperialism.

Alternatively in the Middle Eastern countries the term kaffir is used as a derogatory term for Christians by the Muslims. During the nineteenth century the Nguni languages were also occasionally referred to as kaffir languages. Additionally the language called Fanagalo which is spoken in South Africa was also despised and referred to as Kaffir language or kitchen language.

In Sri Lanka there is an ethnic group called the Sri Lanka Kaffir people and their language is called the Sri Lanka Kaffir language.
