The word to desolate (a person) is a verb. It is similar in meaning to the word to desert. It means to abandon or to leave someone who needs you or counts on you to be with him in his hour of need. To leave someone in the lurch has the same meaning as the word to desolate.

To desolate a place also means to depopulate the place or to reduce the population of the place. Desolate also means bare. An uninhabited place which offers no shelter or sustenance, especially one which is located in a remote (and not densely populated) area, is known as a desolate place.

A desolate person is someone who is deeply depressed and crushed by grief, especially after receiving a heartbreaking piece of news. To desolate also means to lay waste to, to devastate or to ravage a place. Some islands are desolate. In other words, they are deserted or uninhabited.
