Hoarfrost is frozen dew. It covers anything or any surface and being frozen dew, it appears white. The word hoarfrost is obtained from two words: hoe and frost. The word hoar has its origin in German and is taken from the word 'hehr'. 'hehr' means sublime. Later, it was adapted by Old High German as hér and meant old. The Old Norse modified it as 'harr' and meant 'grey with age'. The Old English adapted it as hār and the Middle English as hor.

The second word frost has its origin in the Old Norse which means frost. Then, it was modified by Old High German. The Old English and Middle English adapted it as frost. Frost is related to freezing. The hoarfrost if generally formed during the early morning. The air cools dropping the temperature below the freezing point, and leads to the formation of hoarfrost. It is called rime, freeze, drop or blight.

It is the needle like frost which forms when the moisture in the air freezes and settles giving everything the appearance of having been flocked like a Christmas tree.
