The word grainy is an adjective which implies that something is made up of or resembles grains in some way or something that is granular. It is used to refer to something that is resembling or much like the grain of wood. It refers to something that has a granular appearance due to particles being clumped together in the emulsion. It is used thus in film and photography.

Synonyms of grainy include gritty, rough, coarse and granular.

Grainy is also a term found in acoustics. When audio recordings have an inherent scratchy sound resulting from the playback or recording equipment being of inferior quality the sound quality or output is said to be grainy.

In film the degree to which the silver granules making up the emulsion appear on screen or in print is known as grainy.
