Gastro means pertaining to the stomach or belly. The word comes from the Greek word gastēr, which means "belly." The three terms which are usually used with the word "gastro," are gastronenteric, gastrointestinal and gastroenteritis.

Gastrointestinal pertains to the gastrointestinal tract that is made up of the stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract or the membrane lining the stomach and intestines is known as Gastroenteritis. The main symptoms of this disease include abdominal cramps, diarrhea and vomiting followed by fever at some occasions. Gastroenteritis on an average last for about 3 days and an adult recovers without much of an issue while children, the aged or people with existing illnesses can get affected severely and result in complications like dehydrations. The main offenders in causing this disease are parasites and bacteria present in spoiled food. Sometimes alcohol and certain kinds of drugs or medicines can also called gastro-related problems.
