Flagellation is a brutal act. It is known as the act of whipping a human body. There specialized implements for this act, it includes rods, cat o nine tails and switches. Mostly whipping is performed forcefully or unwillingly on subjects, it is performed as a part of a punishment.

However in case of Flagellation the individual can offer himself willingly. It can also be performed on oneself in sadomasochistic and religious context. Flagellation is done under the supervision of a doctor; the doctor would monitor the punishment and would ask them to stop if the individual can't bear safely. During the time of the Roman Empire flagellation was done as a prelude to crucifixion. However the Romans used this torture method only on the non citizens of the country.
