Denomination is a word derived from another word denominate. It is a noun. It has several meanings depending on the context.

It refers to the price of a postage stamp. The local denominations may not necessarily correspond with the denomination of the stamps. It is face value of a coin. It refers to the different values of money. Different places have different denominations. US for instance has six denominations like cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar and dollar.

Likewise denomination also means a subgroup within a religion. It operates under a common name, follows the same tradition and has the same identity. This term is used a lot in Christianity. The equivalent to this term in Islam is called a sect. every caste or a collection of castes is called a denomination in Hinduism. All these religions have several denominations.
