The word "devout" means someone who is deeply devoted to the fulfilment of the rites and obligations of their religion. It can be best described in a word as being "religious". A person who is dedicated to his or her religion is said to be devout. It also includes the displaying of piety or reverence. It is also used sometimes to mean earnest or sincere.

The word "devout" comes from the Middle English which nicked it from the Old French. Its roots lie in the Latin word "devotus" which means "devote".

Certain similar words include holy, pious, devotional, religious, saintly, pietistical, godly, pietistic and prayerful. Antonyms of the word include insincere, unbelieving and irreligious etc.

Devout can be used in sentences in the following ways; "He is a devout Christian and visits church regularly", "The devout will be the first to enter the kingdom of heaven" etc.

yes, that was as thorough and enlightening answer as I have had the priveledge to read. To add would be to detract, but devout means 'spiritually committed' or devoted to.
